A geographical Indication is a form of Intellectual property Right (IPR) and a recognition given by the Government for a traditional product originating from a place and over the years has carved a niche in the minds of the consumers and the place and the product originating from the place have become synonymous. The moment you name the place / region, invariably the product manufactured from that place comes into one’s mind. Examples are Darjeeling Tea, Kanchipuram sarees and of course, our very own ‘Hyderabad Haleem’. Under the guidance of Mr. M.A. Majeed, Proprietor of PISTA HOUSE, who is also President of Hyderabad Haleem Makers Association (Registered under Andhra Pradesh Societies Act) Mr. Ravi S, IP Consultant took the task and the Application for Geographical Indication was filed in December 2009 and after due scrutiny and prosecution of the GI application and examination done by the GI registry of India located in Chennai it was decided to confer upon the GI status for Hyderabad Haleem. A power point presentation was also given on behalf of the ‘Hyderabad Haleem Makers’ Association’ to the High level Committee constituted by the Indian GI registry enumerating the salient features, uniqueness, historical significance, quality parameters, method of making etc of Hyderabad Haleem.
